Hey U.T.M!
Are You QR ID'd?

Goal

"Enhancing the convenience of Access to products and services at UTM.”

Explanation

A QR code is a two dimensional bar card that has the ability to store more extensive data and information. We hope to implement this by designing a system that uses QR codes around UTM campus. An interview taken of UTM students revealed that the current chip technologies utilized on the UTOR ID cards are ineffective. The existing chips are easily damaged, and students often encounter 'error' problems when trying to use their ID cards, which makes the process extremely tedious. Another major problem occurs after improper usage of the card which often occurs with newer students. For example, when a student inserts their T-Card into the machine for various uses, sometimes they logout incorrectly and consequently have their cards flagged. The only way to unflag the T-Card and enable further use is to consult the T-Card office, which obviously has limited hours. Considering the current state of T-Cards and the many issues pertaining to the ineffective technology we managed to generate different options to resolve the issue and finally settle with the QR code concept.

How?

Our systems intends on using QR codes on both a physical and digital medium. Each student will be assigned a unique QR Code. The physical codes will be printed on a UTM ID card. Card readers stationed at the UTM campus will read the QR codes. In that case, students could even download their QR code on their mobile phones allowing for greater convenience.

Unlike the microchips the QR code cannot be easily damaged and thus students do not need to frequently replace their cards. The QR codes provide access to the facilities on compass through a QR code reader found at the entrance of labs, lecture rooms as well as the fitness centre.

Another important feature for this project is the balance refilling application found on ROSI. Just as students pay their tuition through their banks, the same idea is implemented with the online balance-refilling feature. Every student will have access to their card balance through the ROSI interface, they can check their balance, and add money when ever needed where the updates occur in real time. This feature is a direct response to many complaints from the student body expressing the need for a more convenient process for balance refilling.
